The system will save your performance and valuable records of your past achievements as a means of promotion and an effective track record.
For your maximum comfort, contestants can participate in the qualifying stage, quarter-finals and semi-finals of COSINES Pi from any location around the world. All you need is:
– a quiet room
– stable Internet connection
– high-quality microphone and headphones
The finalist will need to be able to attend the Moscow event in September.
COSINES Pi III opens doors to both professionals and beginners with a great professional potential.
Simultaneous interpreting (SIM) contest includes two categories:
Consecutive interpreting (CON) is open only to Professionals.
Contestants may participate simultaneously in different profiles (profile represents the combination of language pair, type of interpreting, and category). Taking part in the profile more than once is not permitted.
Category ‘Potential’ welcomes senior students and interpreters who are relatively new to the profession with:
– up to 5 years of proven experience
– at least 3 years of higher or professional school training
Category ‘Professional’ is open for interpreters with over 5 years of experience in simultaneous or consecutive interpreting.
In the qualifying stage contestants will work on a video or an audio fragment about 8 minutes long from Russian into English / French / Spanish / Italian / German / Chinese, from English into Chinese depending on a language combination.
Simultaneous interpreting implies continuous, uninterrupted speech rendering by a contestant with no possibility for playback or replay.
Consecutive interpreting allows the contestant to pause the video as often as the contestant requires (but no playback or replay is possible). The system will be recording the whole session of interpreting including pauses.
The experts will assess the contestant’s professionalism in all aspects of his or her work, including:
– the length of pauses
– behaviour between the pauses
– transition between fragments when interpreting
(1) The qualifying stage offers 7 subject areas of the videos to choose from. They include:
– economics and politics
– business strategy and management
– banking and finance
– oil and gas
Contestants are welcome to choose 1-3 subject areas in which they will compete.
In (2) the quarter-finals contestants will work on a video or an audio fragment about 10 minutes long from English / French / Spanish / Italian / German / Chinese into Russian, from Chinese into English depending on a language combination.
The subject areas will merge to include several branches for the contestants to show their interpreting skills across varying scenarios that may naturally arise in a normal human conversation.
Semi-finalists and Finalists will not have the benefit of choosing subject areas for interpreting. The contest tasks may include a broader spectrum of topics ranging from:
– disruptive technologies
– ecological and civilizational issues
– medicine and human health
More detailed information will be available for the contestants at a later stage of COSINES Pi III.
QUALIFYING STAGE: April 1 – June 20
Make your attempt before 16 April for more chances.
Early registration: use 3 attempts on the same day before April 16. Send one for review within 24 hours.
Regular registration: use 2 attempts on the same day from April 15. Send one for review within 24 hours.
In each profile of participation the contestant will be offered three attempts in early registration before April 16, and only two attempts from this date.
During the first attempt the system will automatically select a video fragment based on the initial choice of the preferred subject areas by the contestant during registration.
During the second and the third attempts the system will randomly select a new video piece for interpreting, very much like during the first attempt.
During the first, the second and the third attempts the subject areas may be the same or different. But the video fragment will change.
Eventually, only one attempt will be chosen by the contestant to be submitted for expert assessment.
Before getting down to the attempt, a contestant is recommended to run a demo test to get a closer grip of the navigation buttons and the procedure. The result of the demo test will not be sent for expert assessment.
Prior to the attempt contestants are advised to check the quality of the video and audio recording.
WARNING: Do not refresh or close the browser page during the attempt. This will lead to the loss of data and the attempt will not be counted.
After the attempt, the contestant will send the recorded fragment for assessment by clicking ‘Send for review’ within 24 hours from the beginning of the first attempt. Otherwise the attempt will be lost.
The Experts will assess the contestants’ performance for:
– overall meaning
– missing information
The contestants will be informed of the completion of the assessment by email.

ORIGINS. COSINES Pi III is an International Contest of Simultaneous Interpreters annually held in Moscow in the premises of Moscow University. The acronym COSINES is formed from the constituent letters of the contest title. The Contest was founded and organized by Professor of Moscow State University Marklen Konurbaev in April 2017 and is now set to happen every year as a regular meeting point for conference interpreters and oral interpreting experts throughout the whole of Russia.
GRASSROOTS. Originally, the Contest saw itself as ‘Mind Olympics’ where budding and experienced interpreters could display their most surprising natural talents in meaning rendering and compete with their peers. The Jury included the pundits of the profession, many of whom served as personal interpreters to Presidents of the USSR, Russia, Bulgaria; CEOs of multinational companies and AIIC interpreters.
The MARKET. On the very first year the Contest attracted the attention of the whole market, hosting participants from over 22 cities around the globe including New York, Paris, the Hague, Antalya and a number of big cities in Russia and the CIS.
STRATEGY. In the coming years, COSINES Pi III will focus on developing a platform for endorsing interpreters’ professional reputation by providing services of independent expertise and managed account platform. The Platform could be further used by interpreters as a database of their personal achievements and as a service base for requesting to endorse their current reputation from the COSINES Board of Independent Experts. Conference interpreters will use this endorsement as another important document in their portfolio to prove their level and qualification.
THE SHOW. The 2018 COSINES Pi is organized as a series of online battles between the contestants and the coaching sessions for the super-finalists who will be advised by the guru of the profession, accent coaches and psychologists helping the finalists to get the best our of their performance on the stage.
